Ashish + Divya: Hindu wedding in Potomac with electric energy

Ashish and Divya got married on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning, surrounded by a crowd of their closest friends and family members. It was quite a party to behold.

This was my first ever Hindu ceremony. I was nervous, but excited. Excitanervous.

Divya, all a-dramatic in her lighting, removes her shoes.

While Divya prepared herself, Ashish and his posse put on loud music, big smiles, and made their way to the temple.

Divya pays her respects, and Ashish makes his way to the temple doors.

Some last-minute well-wishes for Divya.

Whoo hoo!

The groom's procession, happy as all!

Divya, veiled by her family and friends, entered the temple.

entering

The priest welcomes everyone, and Divya, veiled, arrives.

And then it’s a game of, “Can I see the bride? Can I see her? Is it REALLY her?”

Ashish tries to catch a glimpse of Divya. Neener neener.

ceremony

IT BEGINS.

Sacred things: fire, food offerings, prayers, and invocations.

The mandap, and lighting incense.

Families bound together through both ritual, love, and spiritual power.

You get to throw stuff at them!!!

And then, portraits of the bride and groom–as newlyweds!

portraits

Cows and nifty bracelets!

The reception was the next day, as is tradition. We took some time before the cocktail hour to do some portraits in their party clothes out on the golf course.

Ah, into the next day, they're still awesomely in love!

First dance money shot: bingo!

TOO SWEET.

I have to say, I absolutely love LOVE love photographing the dancing at the reception. Everyone whips out crazy moves and I get to play with my lights. Wins all around.

Everyone lets it all hang out!

What a weekend. What a warm and welcoming family. I got to eat both North Indian AND South Indian food, and participate in a delightful family gathering. Now, to end with a feet shot.

FEET! On-location.

  1. Great Wedding Pictures.

  2. Lovely photos, and I especially like the one of guests throwing rice at the unsuspecting bride & groom (love the expressions on their faces!) Good timing on that shot.
Beautiful colors on the wedding day photos, and one of my favorites is the close-up photo of the gold, red, and white bracelets.
Thanks for sharing these photos on your blog!

  3. Divya and Ashish’s wedding ceremony and reception was indeed a dream wedding, very well captured in the wonderful photos. They look like scenes straight out of Indian movies like Bride and Prejudica and Monsoon wedding. Great job, Jocelyn!

  4. Jocelyn, what an amazing set of photos. I can’t imagine how intimidating it must have been to document such a different kind of wedding, but you’ve made me want to see one of these ceremonies for myself! Gorgeous colors, lots of motion and a real human center. As always.<3
