Emily + Dino: black and white engagement portraits via HOLGA
At Emily and Dino’s engagement session, I did something a little extra different this time around. I whipped out my HOLGA.
I don’t usually do that sort of thing; it’s been awhile since I’ve shot film for clients. I usually reserve it for personal fine art projects, because of the expense and alteration of my workflow.
But I knew that Dino and Emily would be open to a little shenanigans, especially if it meant for making fun images.
I love this format; I’ve been making multiple-exposure panoramas with the HOLGA for years now, and it really feels quite intuitive and fun to stage these poses and variations over and over again. I think that if I could, I’d photograph quite a lot with the HOLGA. If left to my own devices, I’d stage everything with a HOLGA and create wacky negatives in wild aspect ratios forever.
The toy camera really is quite limited, and I’m self-conscious about how popular they are these days, but I really feel at home with it. Completely at home.
Thank you, Emily and Dino, for letting me create images so dear to my heart, and dear to yours.
