The Jones Family

Last weekend I got together with the Jones family to take a few impromptu portraits. Blaise, the newest addition to the Jones family, is a bubbling 3-month old.

Daren, the proud father:

Bernice, the happy mother:

And a moment of joy:

When taking the portraits, I lamented that we hadn't spent as much time outside as I had hoped. It was insanely hot, however, and eventually we were all sweating so much we simply had to go inside. But things turned out very well--Blaise was carted around happily, and was such a friendly baby.

I love photographing children.

Newborn Aiden

Little Zenaida got a baby brother recently. His name is Aiden.

She and mom are adjusting well to their new roles and new demands. Aiden is a beautiful pudgy boy, with his own very distinctive grunt, his hands in perpetual motion when awake. He downs a bottle eagerly.

When I visited them, Zenaida had just woken up from a nap, her hair tousled, but she was very eager to make friends.

Aiden is quite the darling; I'm sure that Zenaida will make a great older sister, and that he'll be a captive audience for her antics.

Brothers

My brothers and I are very fortunate to have close relationships with each other. We grew up, fighting and playing, homeschooled from middle school to high school. Kevin and I went to the same college (Messiah), and Philip found his own home at Houghton, and is halfway through his career there. The three of us now have our separate homes in Dallas, Baltimore, and Boston. It's great when we can get together.

While we were on vacation in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, I took the time to pull them both aside and take a few portraits. I had a lighting assistant for both of these, holding a gold reflector for fill light. Both shots were taken in the shade, with the afternoon sun coming in from the side. I enjoyed experimenting by lighting each of them very differently.

Kevin

Kevin's portrait is the rare occasion where I think the lettering and picture on his t-shirt actually helps to make the portrait more successful. For many men his age, growing up with video games helped to form his identity and turned into one of his favorite pastimes. Some of my fond memories of him are playing networked games on our home computers back in the '90s, such as Bolo and Super Maze Wars.

One of the things I like about this portrait is that it exudes the confidence that Kevin has going on. All through his young adulthood he was poked fun of because of his curly hair (yes, it's natural); he learned to roll with the punches and be satisfied with who he is.

Philip

Philip is six years younger than me. Growing up, of course, that makes a huge difference, but these days it's nice to be able to connect more now that the age doesn't matter so much.

I like that these portraits of him capture his introspective qualities. He's an intense thinker, and has a lot to say when asked. He gives deep and earnest consideration to ideas. What's missing from these, though, is his goofy sense of humor. That, I think, is best captured in this shot:

boo!

He was pretending to nap, only to jump up and surprise me while my shutter was clicking. Needless to say, I got a little freaked out.

Just like old times.

Gabby & Maya: Kid Sisters

This is the story of Gabby and Maya, two adorable kid sisters.

sisters together

Their mom, Jamie, invited me over for a spell one afternoon. Instead of traditional payment, we agreed to barter: I photographed her daughters in exchange for a huge haul of excellent used toys to bring home to my daughter Ruth! A great win-win situation.

gabby's grin

Gabby, the eldest daughter, conversed with me freely and enjoyed hamming it up.

maya's smile

Maya was almost completely full of giggles the entire time.

sisters

Some of my favorite goofy shots were when I told the girls to spin around and be silly. By far, the best technique was to tell them, "Don't you smile at me!" in a scolding voice, or "Don't let me take your picture!"

fun hands

Photographing these little girls gave me a little view into what motherhood will be like for me in the coming years. At every stage in a child's development, there are new levels of beauty and mystery!

Old and Beautiful

I have a collection of old things. Some are meaningful family heirlooms, others are old photographs or interesting pieces of junk I picked up at antique and thrift stores. Things that are worn and used feel loved to me. I don't think I could ever have a house with completely modern design in it because of that--I would find it attractive, but it would lack the texture and variety that I like to have in my visual environment.

old things

Even some of my old mass-produced photographs from when I was a teenager are developing their own texture through degradation. These photos of my grandparents, for instance. It's beautiful to watch the silver oxidize and solarize the photograph.

photo degradation

photo degradation

My grandmother Louise (from the first photograph) has passed away, and watching her image slowly degrade is a chilling reminder of how people can fade from your memory. I sing her lullabies to my daughter, and tell her "I love you to pieces," like grandma used to tell me. One day I'll teach her how to blow bubbles with her hands, and I hope to pick up an old-fashioned egg-beater so that we can make suds together in the tub. Just like I did with grandma.

Brother and Sister, friends of the reindeer

Early one Saturday morning, I met Ian and Jenna, two cute little ones. Their family was taking pictures for the ubiquitous holiday Christmas card, but we had a little extra time to do a few "outtakes".

Ian proudly paraded outside on his scooter, wearing a bright and fetching hat.

Indoors, he made his affection for a certain stuffed toy reindeer quite apparent.

Jenna, his younger sister, also loved up the stuffed reindeer.

And squealed her delight!

The Kesslers Play Outside

On a Sunday afternoon, the Kesslers had me over for a little while to photograph some of their family moments. Their three little girls were simply beautiful. The youngest, only a babe, cooed and laughed at her older siblings before succumbing to her nap. Liza was especially funny--I told her to jump up from the couch and run-run-run in place to get out some of her fidgets.

After the babe was fast asleep, we all ventured outside for some good old-fashioned playtime.

Familiar Faces at Christmas

I am so fortunate to have family that is willing to visit me on a regular basis. Our parents get along well with each other, and my brothers treat Stephen as a long-lost sibling.

We partook in eggnog...

Three Sisters: Cara, Abby, & Megan

When the weather warmed up after a long week of rain, three little sisters, their mother, and I, made our way to Centennial Park. The sun was hitting the trees in the afternoon, and the air couldn't have been more perfect for a leisurely and exciting round of playground antics.

Cara, the eldest, has an easygoing and ready smile. She wasn't self-conscious around me, and I didn't have to prompt her much to try a few funny things for the camera.

Abby became infatuated with the challenge of hanging from a pair of gymnast's rings, as well as the causeways between towers on the playgrounds. She kept me quite active, chasing her from one end to the other; it was a challenge to keep up!

run!

Megan is just plain bubbles, inside and out! I seemed to intimidate her a bit, though, so every now and then she'd see me following her from afar and then run to mommy. She started to warm up towards the end of the session, which is how I got that big grin out of her.

After some sidewalk chalk and a little jumping action, the three sisters sat down to snack and smile for the camera in the dimming afternoon light. What perfect weather!

Peter Peter Perfect Smile!

About a year and a half ago, Peter graced his parents presence in a most blessed way; he was adopted as a tiny infant by his parents, Kim and Craig. Now, he's an outgoing and curious toddler, totally in love with the outdoors.

The weather forecast had called for thunderstorms, but as luck would have it, a break in the weather, the clouds, and the mood came right as Kim and I took Peter in the backyard.

Craig mowed the lawn (which fascinated Peter), and we took the little guy on a wagon ride, an trip in his car, and a visit to the spruce tree in the front yard (whose height he kept pointing out to us).

What I loved was the moment when Kim said, "Show us your teeth, Peter!" and he gave this incredibly mangled-but-cute-looking grin. What a ham!

The Limoges Family: Oscar the Wonder Dog

The other evening, I was joined by Jenny and Cliff and their new addition to the family: Oscar. Oscar is a rescue dog; Jenny had been wanting a dog "for twenty-six years!" and finally was able to get one. With the help of some chicken treats, Oscar and I got acquainted, and he started posing for me.

Cool shadows and fun times in Fells Point.

Jenny and Cliff purchased a cute doggie tie off of Etsy from Whisker Kisses, which added a bit of variety to his "look". Very business like, although in that particular shot it looks like he could use a little happy hour!

But check out those EARS!

Close-ups of Oscar, Wonder Puppy!

What a fabulous silhouette he has! I think my favorites are of him in profile, because his nose simply oozes character. And of course because of his ears, he casts a magnificent shadow, too.

Oscar has a magnificent story too. Jenny and Cliff got him from Boston Terrier Club of Maryland, who worked with Oscar for a year to get him used to people after a frightening life in a landfill. "He was thrown into a dumpster when he was a puppy," said Jenny, and that's why the Terrier Club named him Oscar, after Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street.

But this Oscar is quite different from his namesake. "He's our little cuddle-bug every night on the couch snorting away. Cliff and I are now his forever home and are so happy to have him part of our family," said Jenny. "We are so glad we got him through a rescue... all of their proceeds go directly to helping other 'Oscars' to find their forever home... what's better than that?"

Indeed, what could be better than helping a companion in need, and then having extra love in the family?

Cute moments with the Limoges family.

Jenny, Cliff, Oscar and I wandered around Fells Point for almost an hour as the sun set. Everything became so picturesque, and the weather was balmy and not too hot. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to the day; with a simple walk, and a friendly dog and his family.

Family Matters & Changes Ahead

It's been awhile since I posted some of my favorite photos of my daughter, Ruth. Cliche alert: she's growing up so fast. These two photos capture my favorite things about her: the way she is completely in love with her dad, and her observant, intense nature.

The first photograph was taken while Stephen was bouncing on a trampoline, which is how Ruth's hair has become rather electric. The second photograph was taken after Ruth had decided to eat dirt. Yup, she's that kind of gal.

So, after quite a busy summer, and because some of you have been asking, here's the latest Mathewes news...

Pregnancy: Baby Imminent!

If you've been following my blog, know me personally, or caught glimpses of me at the local grocery store, you know I'm pregnant. Right, now, I'm very pregnant. It's t-minus three weeks, folks, until the new sibling (a boy--Lucas) arrives. The Official Due Date is August 22nd, but anyone who's been through birth knows that Anything Can Happen.

Time to hurry up and wait!

Little Jacob and His Parents

Last month little Jacob and his parents and I got together for some informal family shots in their home and at a nearby playground. This young five-month-old was all smiles and contentedness; you could feel all the doting and love beaming out of his deep, brown eyes.

All smiles in the blue room!

I simply loved the color of this wall in Sylvia and Mike's house. The two of them photograph so well (you can see from my previous session with them), it was a no-brainer that Jacob would be a cutie.

Happy laughing baby.

See? All laughs.

Cuddle time outdoors.

At the playground, Jacob started to get a little tired, but that didn't stop him from enjoying his parents' antics.

Mischief with his parents.

Of course, the thing about babies is that they're always unpredictable and changing up your plans; I shot these photos of Jacob messing with his mom's hair and rubbing his eyes in the few minutes before we left--bedtime for him!

Dog Days: The End of Summer

Summer has come to a close. I'm remembering all of the fun moments we've had with our friends and family, especially given our most recent news: we've moved to Boston so Steve can attend seminary on full scholarship!

We will miss Ruth's little friend Julia, who looks so much like her father. (Of course we'll miss her parents, too.)

0

We will miss all the friendships we've cultivated here. But rest assured, we'll be back to visit.

0

It's such a shame that so many of our memories here will probably not be available to Ruth, but hopefully all the pictures I've taken will give her an idea of how happy we were, and are.

0

And though we're living in Boston now, I'm still booking weddings for Baltimore in 2010. There are a now 6 slots left in my schedule, and for eager couples in either city, I look forward to hearing from you!

So farewell, summer, and hello to a brand new chapter in our lives!

Zenaida & Aiden: Cute Kids in the Grass

It all started at Centennial Park in Columbia, Maryland. Chris and Lily agreed that letting the kids have their run of the playground would make for some fun candids.

It's playtime!

After a little warming up, we moved to a nearby field to play in the shade. Aiden took to exploring all over while devouring an apple.

Chris and Lily looked on, enjoying some quiet moments together.

Zenaida did her best to construct daisy chains and make grass confetti.

The whole affair was a beautiful success. Such a family full of fun!

Welcome to the world, little one!

A recent newborn session yielded some super-cute photos that I couldn't help but set to music.

Welcome to the world, little one!
